Electronic Communications

Objectives

The Electronic Communications Sub Group was originally established to define electronic trading standards for the Newstrade electronic supply chain to facilitate the development of common solutions for effective electronic trading. These standards were published in September 2004.

As a result the following new objectives have been set:

  • To guide and assist the implementation of the published Electronic Communication Standard by providing advice as requested and facilitating an exchange of ideas.
  • To share best practice and the practical experience gained from implementation of the Standard.
  • To update and refine the Standard periodically, as may be required in light of experience.
  • To set an agenda for the continuing development of electronic trading within the industry, to agree new standards where required and to draw on the expertise of Newpet as appropriate to resolve technical issues.

Progress

The Electronic Communication Standards for electronic trading between wholesalers and retailers have been published but are very much “work in progress”. No party (retailer or wholesaler) is as yet ready to start sending messages in the proposed formats. However, there are a number of parties signalling their willingness to take this forward to trial stage.

The ECG will continue to encourage this, to see what lessons can be learned from such trials.

Objectives

  • To facilitate trials of the electronic standard, as described above, and the group is continuing contacts with retailers and other interested parties in order to encourage this.
  • Electronic invoicing by newspaper publishers to wholesalers. While magazine publishers already commonly use e-invoicing, this is not the case for newspapers. It is hoped to make early progress by using existing Tradacomms standards.
  • Communication between carriers and wholesalers. The use of electronic communications might include pre-advice of deliveries, the acquisition of “PoD” information and the handling of shortage claims.
  • Retailers’ use of data pools.
  • Solutions for smaller retailers, given that in the main, the new Standard is of most use to large retailers.
  • Radio Frequency Identification.
