Executive Summary

The JIG Board directed that one of the key projects for 2008 would be the 'Unsolds Challenge'.

There has been a growing concern throughout the Industry of the increasing levels of unsolds and the subsequent impact on the environment together with escalating costs to all participants within the supply chain.

However, this needs to be balanced with an accepted and desired requirement for diverse and pluralist newspaper and magazine availability across the UK's 54,000 retail outlets to give all UK consumers ready access to their favourite newspaper and magazine.

Detailed on this page are links to the Unsolds Challenge 'Purpose' and progress with the 5 work streams.

All JIG members have actively contributed to the progress of this initiative and have provided a legacy of information on current trends of Unsolds by market and retail sector which will be updated  monthly  for newspapers and  quarterly for magazines.

Sales Based replenishment remains a key activity that has demonstrably improved levels of sales efficiency for those titles and retailers that are involved. A dedicated SBR workgroup will continue to drive improvements and broaden the number of beneficiaries from the process.

Other relevant information and reports of activity to improve efficiencies can also be accessed under work stream 4.

A key benefit derived from the Unsolds challenge initiative in 2008 is the JIG Board's agreement to use the learnings from the Unsolds Challenge together with work previously undertaken on reducing Shrink to develop a new initiative focusing on how the Industry can work more proactively to improve 'Sales'.

As 2009 unfolds JIG members are minded that combined efforts will be necessary to find more effective ways to collaborate and find new and innovative ways of working together to improve efficiencies and create the best possible opportunities for sales to flourish.

Progress on the 'Sales Development' initiative will be updated on this website by April 2009.
